MEET JIM & HIS FAMILY

Jim’s path to the law was earned the hard way. It was not typical.

After high school, college did not seem like the right fit, so he went to work as an electrician’s apprentice. When a nonunion employer left him and his coworkers unpaid, and the legal system offered little practical relief, Jim saw firsthand both the power of the law and the gaps ordinary people can face when trying to navigate it.

Jim then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Injuries cut his service short, but he received an honorable discharge and left with values that still guide him today: discipline, accountability, and respect.

His military service helped him earn a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and his law degree from Wayne State University Law School. He began practicing law in 2002.

Over more than 23 years in practice, Jim has handled numerous jury trials and argued before the Michigan Court of Appeals. In 2017, he founded Macomb Law Group, where he has continued representing injured individuals and families navigating the legal system. In 2025, he also began serving as a facilitator and mediator.

Jim and his wife, Kelly, have been part of the Macomb County community for nearly three decades.

They raised three children here, one a 2022 graduate of De La Salle Collegiate and two graduates of Dakota High School in 2023 and 2025. Their oldest child was born with Down syndrome, giving their family firsthand experience with the medical system, educational challenges, and the daily realities many families quietly manage.

Macomb County is home. It is where Jim built his practice. It is where he raised his family. And it is where he now seeks to serve.

WHY JIM SPAGNUOLO FOR JUDGE?

“I believe the courtroom should be the one place in our community where politics stop and fairness begins.” — Jim Spagnuolo

When people come to court, what is at stake is real: their families, businesses, property, and liberty.

That is why experience matters. Preparation matters. Temperament matters.

Jim has stood before juries. He has examined expert witnesses. He has handled complex evidentiary issues. He understands that trial-court decisions carry real consequences and are subject to appellate review.

Macomb County does not need ideology on the bench. It needs fairness, judgment, and integrity.

JUDICIAL PHILOSOPHY

“A judge’s job is not to make law. It’s to apply it—faithfully and fairly.” — Jim Spagnuolo

Jim will be a rule-of-law judge: guided by the Constitution, the statutes enacted by the people’s representatives, and binding precedent—not politics and not personal agendas. Jim will:

Apply the law fairly and consistently. Every person deserves equal treatment and the same rules in the same courtroom.

Maintain discipline and order. Respect is required for everyone in the courtroom.

Listen before ruling. People must feel heard, even when the outcome is difficult.

Follow precedent. Stability and predictability are essential for families, workers, and businesses planning their lives and resolving disputes.

Move cases efficiently. Unnecessary delays increase stress and costs. Justice delayed is often justice denied.

Jim will bring discipline learned in the marines, humility learned as a parent, and practical judgement developed over two decades of courtroom experience.

ABOUT THE CIRCUIT COURT

The Macomb County Circuit Court is responsible for:

Felony criminal cases
Civil disputes exceeding $25,000
Family matters such as divorce and custody
Appeals from District Courts

These cases are complex. They demand judges who understand trials, motion practice, evidentiary rules, and appellate review.

Jim has handled cases from filing through verdict and appeal. That perspective matters on the bench.
